The Local Area

The town of Okehampton stands proudly on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park, making it an ideal base for exploring the moor, the Devon countryside, and the wider South West.

Okehampton is best known for its historic Okehampton Castle, a dramatic medieval ruin overlooking the town, and the Museum of Dartmoor Life, which tells the story of the area’s landscape, people, and traditions. The town offers a wide range of independent shops, cafés, restaurants, and pubs, along with excellent everyday amenities. There are three supermarkets — Lidl, Co-op, and Waitrose — all within a short walk of Roundaway Lodge, making it easy to stock up during your stay.

Okehampton is also a popular destination for walking, cycling, and outdoor activities, with direct access onto Dartmoor and miles of scenic routes nearby.

• Launceston – Gateway to Cornwall with its Norman castle and historic centre (24 miles by car)

• Exeter – Cathedral city with excellent shopping, dining, and culture (24 miles by car, Bus 6 / 6A, hourly train to Exeter St Davids)

• Plymouth – Historic waterfront city, accessible via Tavistock (24 miles by car)

With its combination of Dartmoor landscapes, historic towns, coastal destinations, and strong transport links, Okehampton is an excellent location for both short breaks and longer stays.
